Although we did not complete the story of Malcolm X, there is much to learn from his experiences which directly connect to issues we’ve covered in class so far.Issues concerning diversity, racism, rights, justice, religion, and more are personally experienced by Malcolm in his search not only for his identity but that of America’s as well.
For extra credit, please write a letter of thanks to the donors of the Autobiography of Malcolm X, explaining what you gained by reading it and why you believe it should be read in future classrooms.
The Authobiography of Malcolm X has helped me better understand Malcolm X’s life, the larger civil rights movement and the conditions of inner city black communities. Malcolm’s early life in the inner city was very common for African Americans at the time. They were in constant pursuit of white women and a more “white” look because it was more socially acceptable. It should be noted that since Malcolm had a lighter skin tone than his black friends, he was better off. This taught me more about social standards during his lifetime.
His conversion to Islam also shows us that religion can still inspire people to repair their lives. Malcolm’s inspiration helped him overcome drugs, alcohol, and a life of crime. The book also proves to be a truthful story about his extremist positions. However, his message at the end, is one of peace and equality; one that many kids can relate to today.
It definitely should be read by youth today in classes because of the many lessons it teaches us. We learn of social standards at the time, race, the civil rights movement, Islam and religion, poverty in the city and much more. It is a book worth reading. I would like to thank those who funded this project to introduce this book to me. It has helped shape my understanding of history and our world today. To you, I am forever grateful.
Sincerely,
Moussa Hassoun
