2)I believe they should have the rights that we have. They have their own laws and traditions. I dont see anyone trying to stop someones beliefs when they have to do with modern day life. They have chosen to stick to the old days traditions such as huts.
3) The way the technology and wars are in present day will effect the indigenous peoples lives. People are always trying to get more land and at one point in time they will try to take the land that is their home land. The people who believe that they should not exist are wrong. You turn to your grandmother, she will have a belief that is different than yours. Her traditions are the same as the past. The way people live their lives has nothing to do with you so I dont believe we have the right to get in the way.

The answer is that they DONT CARE ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

like i said people only care about themselves

Does anybody really think James Cameron cares about making people think, this is the same man who has caused thousands of naive [people] to think that the Titanic isnt true or that the love story is completely true

1. I honestly haven’t seen the movie but nobody will listen or pay attention to the point of it anyway because it’s a good movie. People will believe what they want to until convinced and a movie isn’t going to get the point across especially a sci-fi fiction. Unless there are people who look beyond the special affects which there are then people will agree. I think for those people that understand it made a success for James Cameron.

2. I believe they have every right to own their land and to have the rights. We believe what we did to the Native Americans years ago was wrong now. They should have all the rights of that land if they don’t want our modern technology and even a modern human being in there then that’s what we should listen too.

3. Some is for land but more for natural resources. Loggers, Poachers, Ranchers, Dam Builders, and Oil companies are the ones against them.

• Do you believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous peoples? Why or why not?
I do not believe that it will translate directly into policy changes. After all, Avatar is a fictional film with a fictional premise. However, I do believe that it will crate awareness about the issues currently facing indigenous people today and may perhaps lead to a change in laws in the future. Right now, it is unfeasible to think that an American film can change so much in an instant, especially since many indigenous people and ‘civilized’ people in foreign nations may not have seen the film.
• To what extent do or should indigenous peoples have rights? Should they be protected by the rights of the nation that claims their land or by UN Treaty (2007), or not at all?
I believe that indigenous people should have rights over their lands as they live and thrive off of that environment. I feel like they should not be protected by any rights of foreign nations at all and instead be allowed to formulate their own laws and regulations and act as a country and also be respected by the world.
• What claims do those who oppose indigenous rights give/have? What are the main issues that threatens indigenous peoples today?
Many people claim that indigenous people are not civilized, and that they are barbarians who do not know what is best for everyone. They are uncultured and unable to comprehend the grand scheme of things. The main issues that threaten indigenous people today is balancing the ‘civilized’ world with their traditional cultures. They also face eviction off of the lands they reside on by big companies who destroy their homes in order to obtain lumber and other natural resources.

No, I don’t think that the success of Avatar will translate into policy changes about the rights of indigenous people. Not to insult those who enjoyed Avatar and thought that it actually had a good plot and message, but, the vast majority of people watching wouldn’t leave thinking about any message to protect native people.  I do believe that the success will translate into lots of money for James Cameron and many more movies like it (Fern Gully rip-offs).

I believe the rights of indigenous people extend to as far as those from developed countries running the UN.  However I do believe that when lands, either those of indigenous people or developed lands, have valuable medical resources that could likely cure cancers and other ailments there should be a way to gain access to them legally and reasonably.

The main issues that threaten indigenous peoples today are the destruction of their lands through oil drilling, mining, or deforestation.  Also threatening these people are the many diseases that are being introduced to the areas from outsiders.

-I believe that this movie doesn't really have an impact on peoples view on indigenous people, because one flim really doesn't make people change the way they feel.

-Yes, i believe they should have the same rights just because they aren't living in big city and using power to consume things that doesn't mean that they shouldn't have rights at all. They should be protected by the government when its needed or when they ask for it.

-The government is trying to gain more land and build things and trying to get them to adapt to the  morden day.

1.) I don’t believe that they will translate into policy changes because the film isn’t going to change things, the people who believe in the causes will make the changes. I do believe that if people who believe in the cause put in their best that things will be changed and indigenous people will be left alone.
2.) They should have the rights to their land and their beliefs. I think they should be protected by whomever. Whoever can be there to help them out when they are being threatened by others should be there for them.
3.) Some believe that they are holding out on important things such as medicine, and land that contains large amounts of oil. Some of the main issues are land, oil, and medicine.

1. I think Avatar will make people look at real life situations in a non-biased way so they see the issue from an ethical standpoint not an economic one. This may lead to policies or it may not, only time will tell.

2. Indigenous peoples have the right to keep their land as it is and say no to people who wish to use their land or its resources.

3. People who are the opposition to the indigenous peoples don't have the right to destroy land that isn't theirs or use it without consent of the indigenous people.

1.) I believe it will help to open the eyes on how peoples lives will be effected and changed.I don't really believe that just one movie is going to change or effect everyone's life but it may effect some.

2.) i think they should followwhat they believe in, if they think our gov't or laws are better then they should change but for now they should stick with there own laws and tradition, but at the same time be protected cause there are no different treatments to people who are not exactly like us.

3.) They have the right to keep there own land and be protected. If you were to change the indigious people's ways of life through technology it would ruin or mess up there traditons and civilization.

They made the land their own!!! doesn't mean its for them! I can sleep in a forest and live there my whole life, and so can all my children, that DOES NOT make it my land.

It makes sense. These people have been there for centuries. It is there land. It's not the same thing as you sleeping in the forest honestly.

·   Do you believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous peoples?  Why or why not?

Yes, I believe that this film could help those who cannot help themselves. This doesn’t mean they are going to change how they think and feel. People shouldn’t have to watch a film just to understand what cultures like, but then again they should see what others go through and they can learn from seeing someone’s point of view in the story.headbang.gif

·   To what extent do or should indigenous peoples have rights?  Should they be protected by the rights of the nation that claims their land or by UN Treaty (2007), or not at all?

I think the people who live on a land should be treated by the laws of the land that which holds together as a nation. I don’t think it’s truly fair that one group of settlers happen to be on this land doing something right when there’s another group of settlers doing something wrong because their nation says that’s the law and they didn’t have to worry about a thing.handshake.gif

·   What claims do those who oppose indigenous rights give/have?  What are the main issues that threaten indigenous peoples today?

3. People that live in their own land, should keep it this way. Technology has helped us a lot with communication and also weapons to help defend our self. Some people like the way they live. Violence and the economy should be the main concern not the peoplethumbsup.gif

1.) Perhaps the success of the film will raise awareness concerning the rights of indigenous people, but i do not personally believe that there will be new policies or policy changes, because although the movie was a massive success, it did not have an impact that would effect the actual laws and regulations of countries.
2.) I feel as though the indigenous peoples should be protected by the laws of the country that claims their land, because the country that has control of the territory should protect all people that inhabit it, regardless of the fact that they are an indigenous peoples.
3.) Most of the issues that threaten indigenous peoples revolve around the issue of land and who has the right to certain plots of land, and whether or not the land that the indigenous people inhabit is rightfully theirs, or does it belong to the the country that controls the land.

in a world with laws, regulation and rules, you own land if your documentation says so. Theirs doesnt.

  • Do you believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous peoples?  Why or why not?

No i do not... i believe that in todays world, people will take this as nothing more than a entertaning substance. people may feel bad during the actual movie for infringing on rights of indigenous people. but when the film is all said and done, i dont think it will make the viewer want to become a better person.

  • To what extent do or should indigenous peoples have rights?  Should they be protected by the rights of the nation that claims their land or by UN Treaty (2007), or not at all?

they should have all rights... there is no reason that they should be taken away there rights because they choose to live a different style than we do. They should be treated just as how we are. what gives us the right to impose our will upon them and make them change.

  • What claims do those who oppose indigenous rights give/have?  What are the main issues that threatens indigenous peoples today?

they claim that indigenous people are less than par humans... in that article it claims that indigenous people are often refered to as savages, slaves, and etc. the main issues that threaten the people would be if others acted on some " not so well thought out ideas" like removing them from their own land

No I don’t believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous people. The film Avatar hasn’t really caught that big of attention around the world. I feel that it was an excellent example of how the government treats indigenous tribes but I don’t necessarily believe that it will forever change the policies and laws in the country.

I believe that indigenous people should have the same equal rights and they should be protected by the rights of the nation that claims their land or by UN Treaty. Indigenous people are humans like everybody else they should have basic human rights, they are entitled to them. I feel if we don’t protect the indigenous people who will? We need to make sure these people have the necessary protection so they can have equal opportunities in life.

In the end technology will eventually destroy indigenous tribes because as time moves on and as technology advances more and more people will want their lands. I feel that they are extremely vulnerable to the modern ways, they need to upgrade or educated themselves to survive this more advance world. They basically have no choice because in the end technology will succeed and the weak will fall.

- I dont believe the movie will make an impact any policy changes, a movie cant change much, people can interpret movies in all kinds of ways, and movies are usually just used for some sort of entertainment.
- I do think they should have the same rights as us, there are people. They arent causing any type of harm to us, so why not?
- I feel like there isnt anything wrong with indigenous people, alot of people however find them to be different because they basically live in there own world. However they arent dangering anyone.

  1. I believe that it show that there are people who don’t believe in the technology of today. There is no point in changing or ruining people lives and place they live at.
  2. I think they should have the same right as we do here in the United States. They should be protected by the right of the nation that they claim right to.
  3. The government trying to gain more land and build thing and trying to get them to conform them to modern day things.
