Please discuss and answer the following questions:
Do you believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous peoples? Why or why not?
To what extent do or should indigenous peoples have rights? Should they be protected by the rights of the nation that claims their land or by UN Treaty (2007), or not at all?
What claims do those who oppose indigenous rights give/have? What are the main issues that threatens indigenous peoples today?
1) I believe it helps to show that there are people out there who do not believe in the technological life that we live today. There is no reason to ruin the lives and places that occupies the land of the civilians there. I believe it willl help to open peoples eyes on how the lives of others will be effected and changed. 2)I believe they should have the rights that we have. They have their own laws and traditions. I dont see anyone trying to stop someones beliefs when they have to do with modern day life. They have chosen to stick to the old days traditions such as huts. 3) The way the technology and wars are in present day will effect the indigenous peoples lives. People are always trying to get more land and at one point in time they will try to take the land that is their home land. The people who believe that they should not exist are wrong. You turn to your grandmother, she will have a belief that is different than yours. Her traditions are the same as the past. The way people live their lives has nothing to do with you so I dont believe we have the right to get in the way.
-my belief is that is the movie may have a impact on peoples view on indigenous peoples, but at the same time people arent really going to get into just because of one film tha isnt gonna really change people view and make them truly care for something.
-yes, i believe they should have the same rights just because they arent living in big city and using power to consume thing doensnt mean that they shouldnt have rights at all. they should be protect and the goverment when its needed should help them/
-the goverment trying to gain more land and build thing and trying to get them to conform threm to morden day thing.
1. I believed that that it will change due to the lack of the violence in the countries. Like for example, when a country has a tribe and everything was destroyed and it made their life more difficult. They needed to change rights to make things to go easier. People always fighting for lands.
2. I think if people are fighting for to save their lands, they have a long struggle until someone give up their land. A leader needs to rule their country to control the entire country. If a civilians tried to destroyed their own properties at the same country, that person should be punished just like the court as today. It’s the same story as the terrorist tried to invade the country and destroy what we have now, so I think a leader should ruled the country. People would fight for lands for oil, money, people to live all cause by war.
3. I think the people that live in their own country should hold the lands and the country’s leader. Technology have helped us a lot such as weapons and communications that helped around the world. Some people have a tradition that they don’t want to be taken away. The country should focuses on violence, and the economy.
they should be protect and the goverment when its needed should help them.
What if different governments have different laws pertaining to indigenous people. One may give them no property rights and another may. One may justify the use of force to put down protests and another may not. Here's a copy of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2007/ga10612.doc.htm
Notice which countries opposed it? There are 4. What does the class think about this topic? Why do you think the US and 3 others are opposed? Will this declaration matter?
no i dont think so i think i will reach out to alot of people but no movie will change a countrys ways they wont change simply because a moive shows a diffent immage of what is proper and what is not and it takes for more to get a country to make a policy change and it wont give people there rights it may give some people the strenght and drive to fight the system
well they should have rigths they are human beings and they have been around for many generations and stayed the same it's not right to change them know i think they should have proper rights and they shouldnt have the country clam there land it is there land some were there in that land before the country or place was even discovered
well they should have freedom and be protected and helped if needed there should be no main interferance with them they should be granted there own society the main issues that threaten indigenous people today are the mixign with other culters some counrtys foceing the to part with the ancient ways other cultures try to change them there land is beeing taking away form
i agree with the first one .. just one movie isnt going to do anything . it may open peoples eyes but there wont be a big aspect of the movie affecting peoples lives or thoughts

do you think Technology has helped the Indigenous people

Why would the people be protected by both our rights and laws as well as their own rights and laws?
1. I believe it helps to show that there are people out there who do not believe in the technological life that we live today. There is no reason to ruin the lives and places that occupies the land of the civilians there. I believe it will help to open people’s eyes on how the lives of others will be affected and changed 2. I think they should have the same right because they should be able to follow their traditions. Yes they should be protected because they shouldn’t be treated differently just cause their not like us. 3) The way the technology and wars are in present day will affect the indigenous people’s lives. I think it will show a lot of people the ways and might change how some people feel about indigenous poeple, but i don't really think that as a whole one movie isn't really going to make a dramatic impact and change poeples view.
Yes, i believe they should have the same rights as we do. People shouldn't be held out or unable to do things because of the way they live or their daily rituals or traditions.
1. I don't think it will help because Avatar is not the only thing showing what is going on. There have been documentaries, and I'm assuming other movies touching on this subject and nothing has happened. 2. Yes indigenous people should have rights. Everyone deserves to have rights. I think they should be able to come up with their own rights, since it’s for them. 3. I think they should have the right to be protected, and the right to keep the land that they made their own. I believe that technology threatens indigenous people today, because they have been fine the way they are for many years, and I think if they added any other elements it would almost ruin their civilization (s).
they should be protect and the goverment when its needed should help them.

im just saying that any goverment that is asked for help when its needed should provide it

do you think Technology has helped the Indigenous people
It could be, if people created technology, that could help them in the future. people often struggle and needed something helpful to make things to go eaier.
Not only do I think it won't, I do not believe movies should have very much political influence because that is not the intent of a movie. A movie is strictly made for entertainment, at most it is to point out flaws in the system or poke fun at modern day social problems, but they should not be used to change policy.
They should have as much rights as they want. The country they live in should provide help and rights to them, but they should not force the tribes to follow them or use the things provided. LEADERS ARE THERE TO SERVE PEOPLE, NOT TO CONTROL THEM. The leaders of the nation should provide everyone equality, but the indigenous tribes should not feel forced to take these offerings, but the things should be there for them if they wish to utilize it.
The main issue that is threatening indigenous people is the takeover of modern day ‘civilization’. Most, if not all tribes just want to be left to their own devices and just want to do their own thing and not be bothered. However most countries and governments want to meddle into their affairs because it is ‘in their best interest’ (which, it probably isn’t) or, probably more likely the case, they are interested in the real estate. Like in the movie “Avatar”, we as a people are after every bit of land we can get our hands on, and if that includes pushing tribes off their native, or even religious grounds, so be it. Which is dead wrong.

1)I believe the success of the film Avatar will show everyone that indigenous peoples deserve rights like anyone else. The film shows the importance of not ruining the areas in which indigenous people live in because it’s wrong; their lives should not be interrupted due to the construction of another mall or Dunkin’ Donuts, for example. It shows how that we shouldn’t treat indigenous people as savages; they are humans too.
2)Indigenous people should have the same rights that we have. They are people too so why shouldn’t they? They should be protected by the UN treaty because the treaty truly helps indigenous people in obtaining protection and rights.
3)Those who oppose indigenous rights say that technology, construction of new buildings and wars will get in the way of the lives of indigenous people. They also say that people will always be greedy to gain more land in order to obtain more money or build expensive million-dollar corporations on indigenous peoples’ land. I believe that people who think this way are wrong; we shouldn’t interfere with the lives of others just because we want to build something on the land in which they live on.
1.I believe the success of the film, Avatar, will not change policies inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous peoples because in the end it is just a movie. Realistically I believe that people have their opinions on certain subjects and when movie’s are made, they portray them in a way that the public will like not in what is real. So the government should know if they should change policies or not and to not base it off of entertainment views.
2.I believe that indigenous peoples should have rights and be protected by the rights of the nation because they are humans and are pretty much the same as people living in the u.s under the government’s control. They are people just living on their own land not causing any harm to us, so they should at least be protected.
3.The claims that those who oppose indigenous rights are that they don’t want them to have their own society and country. The main issues are that they don’t want to mix cultures and the government is also trying to gain more land, so it’d be taking away from the indigenous people and leave them with pretty much nothing.
No, I don’t’ believe the success of the film, Avatar, will translate into policy changes inside and between nations concerning the rights of indigenous people. It has been several months since its release in 2009, if the film was to initiate any kind of serious change it would do so within this time, and so far it hasn’t. There would be public outcry about atrocities toward indigenous people, but unfortunately, that hasn’t happened. Through other media outlets about the realities of our society, The Jungle, initiated a lot of change almost directly by bringing public outcry and media coverage. Avatar has not brought nearly the amount of attention, despite having a broader audience, as well as a more effective tool to send out its message. Most people just view it as a movie, and don’t care enough about the realities of indigenous people on our planet. Indigenous peoples should be subject to the rules and laws of the nation that claims their land. If the indigenous land is between two nations, the laws should be changed based on the borderline. UN treaties, even when ratified by a nation, are not always followed especially because there aren’t enforcement mechanisms. So, it would be useless to have them protected by rights of the UN Treaty (2007). The individuals of the villages and clans should have all the rights of the country that provides them, however, I don’t see how property rights would apply to them. The government has had to have official paperwork to say that the land was theirs in the first place. Only then, can they claim the land as their properties. I understand they have been there for hundreds or thousands of years, however, in our society today, we work within limits and regulations. I can’t own any land unless I have it registered with some governmental body. So the government can move to register the land as theirs, otherwise it is government property in which they can keep as natural parks, or allow companies to pillage the forrest. Opposition to indigenous people’s rights centers mainly on land issues. Many view the land of these villages to be government property as national parks, forests, or rainforests. They are just people living on the land with no substantial claim to it. I can live in the forrest, but it doesn’t make the forest mine; the forest remains under the control of the government, no matter who lives on it, and how they live on it. If the government sees fit to use this PUBLIC asset to allow companies help expand their economy and build a stronger workforce, then supporters don’t see why not. Deforestation as well as globalization threaten indigenous people. With the expansion of cultures very different than their own, their small and little known ways of life are slowing decaying. Deforestation destroys the land that many of these people use to live off of. This forces them to move into the larger community where their way of life is dramatically changes.

for your first question: it may affect how people think, but will it lead to substantial and REAL change?
for your second question: Don't you think the treaty doesn't take into consideration the laws of the specific countries if they are other than the treaty?

oI feel the success of Avatar is just as a cool sci-fi movie, because that’s all I saw it as until I realized he probably got inspiration for the movie with real life events and struggles. It shows their struggle to their extreme and if people realized that is what’s really happening they might try to help and the more people to speak up the better it is. The movie was a happy ending but unfortunately indigenous people’s fights rarely end like that. After reading the article I appreciate Avatar more because of the meaning behind it. I also feel bad for the indigenous people that try their hardest but feel like it doesn’t make a difference. Like their voice doesn’t mean anything. If people outside of the indigenous environment voice their views maybe there will be change. Oil is not nearly as precious as human’s life and well deserved rights.
oI think indigenous people should have the rights they’ve always had. The rights that started their tribe and they live by. It’s not like they are a new group trying to rebel, they have been this way through generations and who is the government to change their culture? I think they should be protected by the UN and they should have their land protected, as long as they are not harming anyone else. As long as they are not a threat to the community why should they be targeted? Who cares if their beliefs, ideas and customs are different they shouldn’t be targeted.
oI think people think its ok to target indigenous people because they are “different” they view them less than human which is not fair. I can kind of understand why people may be upset that they have different laws but they are on their own. They aren’t roaming around the streets with spears threatening our communities, so why is such an issue for them to have their customs? I think why businesses target them is because they feel they aren’t up to the standards. As if they are nothing just crazy people who can’t get accustomed to “normal” life. Which is completely unfair and not true.

well, i still believe they should get some rights granted to them, whether it be 1 or 25 at least something so they cang feel they belong. but if they live in a dictatorship where no one is guarenteed rights then thats a whole different story because we aren't talking about a dictatorship.
·No not really, because private companies don’t really care about the indigenous people, if they did they wouldn’t be cutting all those tree’s down and they know that indigenous live off the forest. James Cameron’s film didn’t do anything to change how people’s views on indigenous people right, because some people don’t really care because it doesn’t affect their daily life. We are some selfish people, careless, cold hearted people who don’t really care about anything if it doesn’t affect them.
·I think they should have rights, because their ancestors been living on that land for thousands or hundreds of years. They should have full rights, and be protected by the UN treaty, but I believe that the UN is a big joke, because they wouldn’t even enforce it. If they did enforce it, they wouldn’t be so much deforestation in South America and hundreds of indigenous native losing their home. The UN is a good example of the NEW WORLD ORDER, it started with the League of Nations and that fail, but they finally succeed with the UN.
·Those who oppose indigenous rights are the ones that are cutting down the forest; the companies believe that they own the land and the indigenous people don’t have any rights. The main issues that are threatening them are deforestation. I bet the companies believe that the indigenous people are no body or subhuman.

They made the land their own!!! doesn't mean its for them! I can sleep in a forest and live there my whole life, and so can all my children, that DOES NOT make it my land.

dictatorships are exactly what we're talking about!! it asks if the laws of their governments should protect them. We all know that there are many nations out there with less then democratic governments, so that idea to consider dictatorships or abuses of power in this dicussion is very appropo.

they should be protect and the goverment when its needed should help them.
What if different governments have different laws pertaining to indigenous people. One may give them no property rights and another may. One may justify the use of force to put down protests and another may not. well i believe if different governments have different laws pertaining to indigenous people than those laws should be followed, but either way they should be allowed some kind of protection and be able to follow some laws.

You don't think that the most successful movie in all human history, with more sales, higher profits, and worldwide records, wouldn't motivate people to help out indigenous people?

appropo means appropriate or to the point. you JUST said that they should be protected within the limits of the government laws. what if the government doesn't provide those rights?

1. Not sure, because I haven’t watched the movie, will get back to you about that tomorrow 2. I think we should all share the same rights, as Bianca said we’re all people. 3. Honestly I’m not sure, don’t know much about indigenous people.
You don't think that the most successful movie in all human history, with more sales, higher profits, and worldwide records, wouldn't motivate people to help out indigenous people?
Ummmmm, i do believe that the movie will have a impact but not a huge one not everyone just because of one movie is gonna ghopp on the causes
so let me get this straight..... you don't think that the BEST SELLING MOVIE OF ALL TIME, and soon to be THE BEST SELLING DVD OF ALL TIME , and the movie with THE MOST PROFITS OF ALL TIME, seen by the LARGEST AUDIENCE OF ALL TIME. will not get people to hop on the cause?

-my belief is that is the movie may have a impact on peoples view on indigenous peoples, but at the same time people arent really going to get into just because of one film tha isnt gonna really change people view and make them truly care for something.

actually to be technical about it, Gone With the Wind was more successful when profits are put into today's money and when you go on individual ticket sales, and it hasn't had an impact on the world in any significant way
dictatorships are exactly what we're talking about!! it asks if the laws of their governments should protect them. We all know that there are many nations out there with less then democratic governments, so that idea to consider dictatorships or abuses of power in this dicussion is very appropo.
well then yeah they should protect them and im sorry but moussa what in the world is appropo?
appropo means appropriate or to the point. you JUST said that they should be protected within the limits of the government laws. what if the government doesn't provide those rights?
well then moussa, i think that they should simple as that ightttt !

IT'S A 3-D How many people only went to see it for the graphics not the story line, people now of days only truly care about themselves unless it really means something to them
The Jungle was just a book. Uncle Tom's cabin was just a play!!! but they all causes serious change in society!
The answer is that they DONT CARE ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
