Background: RAFT assignments are useful tools to try to understand complex issues. In this first RAFT assignment, we are going to examine the issues of diversity by placing ourselves in someone else's shoes. This was one of the most important lessons that Jane Elliot taught in her 'blue eye/brown eye' experiments. We're going to try to put it into practice today. Each of the prompts below discusses cultural diversity or cultural unity from different perspectives.
Assignment: You will choose four of the ten RAFT options below. When you are writing your answer, imagine that you are the person described in the prompt. RAFT stands for role, audience, format and topic. You are the role, the audience is the group you are interacting with, the format is the way you are interacting and the topic is what you are discussing or doing. You may use the internet to learn more about the topics you choose. Some will require research. Have fun with the assignment and put yourself 'in character'.
1.You are the school class president. Write out an outline of events for ‘Diversity Day’ at your school. Deliver to principal.
2.You are a Native American girl. In a poem, explain to your classmates how you view American expansion in the West.
3.You are Cesar Chaves. In a private letter to Robert Kennedy, explain your position on Hispanic/White relations.
4.You are having your first day at a new school. Visually describe every form of cultural unity and diversity you see.
5.You are US diplomat in a Middle East embassy. In a memo, analyze the similarities and differences between both cultures.
6.You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games.
7.You are Langston Hughes. In a poem, laud and criticize American society for its cultural unity and its cultural diversity.
8.You are Nelson Mandela. After being elected president, give a speech to the National Party concerning future race relations.
9.You are a sci-fi author. Outline the plot of your novel which describes how a multi-species world builds respect for diversity.
10.You are an asylum seeker. In a statement to the State Dept., explain your reasons for wanting to come to America.
Evaluation: You will receive 20 points for each prompt answered. [80 pts. total] You will also receive 10 points for asking a question or making a comment or suggestion to another student's post and you will receive 10 points for replying to a student's comment here.
2. You are a Native American girl. In a poem, explain to your classmates how you view American expansion in the West.
They arrived in this country
Pushing out its inhabitants
Moving them to new areas
Only to be pushed out again
Pushing and ignoring
Never stopping and knowing
Eventually no one will be left
6. You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games.
Rivals can benefit from being placed in an environment together, provided that the environment is not hostile like they are used to. Sometimes seeing someone in a new environment can let you learn something that you were previously unaware of. Sports are a good way to let people compete in a non-violent way. Basketball will allow them to burn energy in a healthy way instead of in acts of hatred and violence.
7. You are Langston Hughes. In a poem, laud and criticize American society for its cultural unity and its cultural diversity.
People being ignorant
Of those that are around them
They never get anything done
But to give up what you are
To be like others is also useless
People need to accept
Both themselves
And those around them
9. You are a sci-fi author. Outline the plot of your novel which describes how a multi-species world builds respect for diversity.
Two species live together on a planet. At first relations are horrible, but over time a small number of individuals decide to try to live with the others. At first the people are weary. Over time the two peoples learn that they are not as different as they were lead to believe. Each species decides to hold an event from their culture on separate nights and invite the other species to observe it. The people hold their events and decide that they have much to learn about one another.
2- This pain begins to grow as this horror that i know furthers on into space to wish to be out of this place, it just seems not to be so.
seeing the sorrow in my families eyes the brightest thing is the skies no matter how i feel inside i know i have them by my side
- I tried ... i don't know how she might have felt.
4- This is easy for me because when I came to New Bedford High School I did not know what to expect. There would be different people than Durfee, and personalities. I was never one to see someone on their ethnicity. I hung out with many African American and Cambodian people when I attended Durfee. When I walked into the halls for the first tiem you saw an African male holding a white females hand. This might sound weird but I smiled , because it wasn't no different from Durfee. Some races did clique together but they also were diverse. No one was with their same race all the time.
9 ) As the story opens up there are four ethnic groups : vampires , lycans , wizards , and mummies. As four usually fought one another. When a vampire was in the presence of a lycan they would become very defensive and at one point they would end up attacking one another until only one was standing. It is September 11, 2001 when a new ethnic group joins them on earth.. they are not from the planet itself. They want to make the planet their own. So the four groups must join one another and fight to keep their lives as they currently stand.
( yes I know very corny I couldn't think of anything )
1) For the events for "Diversity Day" , the students will dress in the clothing attire and if you are biracial then you may choose any one of the few. The students will meet in the gym and we will have different music playing from different countries. A week before Diversity Day we will have voting in home room on which country we will choose to choose the music or game ect.. So that its not all one. We can have local food organizations with different ethnic groups to help to feed the students at lunch time. In one gym we will have the art of different cultures where you can do "arts and crafts" of your own from the culture. http://www.kinderart.com/multic/ . To top it all off the students can perform something from their own culture in the auditorium.
2. You are a Native American girl. In a poem, explain to your classmates how you view American expansion in the West.

Pushing out its inhabitants
Moving them to new areas
Only to be pushed out again

In this Sci-Fi story there is a man of peace who lives in our time period 2010 but accidently stumbles on an ancient time machine in Massachusetts made in ancient times to see what would happen in the future but when they found out they couldn’t change what would happen they stowed it away. When he sees this machine he investigates it and it turns on sending him to the time period of 2684. He then learns different things and finds out he can’t go back so he must live here the only problem is… Earth is at war with Aliens. These aliens are different from each other born to be warriors and fight in wars. These aren’t your normal green Martians these aliens are different species and very diverse, but in the past they weren’t like this they used to kill each other steal from each other they hated the others because they looked different but when they learned about Homo Sapiens they learned that diversity is a good thing and they learned that they all have a similarity..To kill others. The reason why the aliens are at war with us is because it is their religion to destroy planets now we don’t know why they believe in this ritual but we will find out. These aliens work with one another and are very peaceful on their homeland with each other. The reason why they have so much respect for each other is because they have battled different worlds with each other and believe in the same thing. This is the story of how one man from the past can make a huge different in our future. Can peace save us or is it going to kill us? Read the book of M L GeezZus’s Diary to find out the story.
-Not sold in stores made up in my mind -Sorry for the huge story just got really bored =)

6) I am a youth basketball orgainzer that wants to give an equal opportunity to rival gangs in atheltic games. I believe that we shouldn't exclude these young teens from an experience that can possibly change their lives. They are learn to have respect for one and other but most important they will have respect from themselves. Also they will learn discipline, cooperation, and leadership skills. Some will finally get the chance to have a team/family that they can be part of and cherish.
1) To the student class body, I am here as you class president to discuss 'Diversity Day'. My ideas is that we should have a mini carnival at the school so the students in the school can get a better understanding for diffferent cultures. Each booth will represent a different country. In each booth will be some music, food, clothing, games, books, etc. from that counntry. Also we will have a raffle and the prizes would be something from a different country. Countries like Thailand, Japan, India, Afghanstan, Poland, Etophia, Peru, Guinea-Bissau, Korea, Russia.
4) I can relate to this because I was a new student freshmen year at Brockton High School. Brockton High School has a very wide range of diversity and culture. There is some many exchange students from different parts of the world. There were haitian, cape verdeans, caucasian, hispanic, asian, etc. That is one of things that i really liked about Brockton High there were about 20 exchange students a year compare to New Bedford High theres is only one.
2) I am from this land. I travel far and wide. The snow is cold and damp. My tears fall from my eyes. I lost many family in my travels.
Why did they do this to us? It was my home before it was theirs But they just came and took it away. Now I must face this tragic ending.

I thought you might want to know my positions on hispanic and white relations. I was raised in a poor family that lost its farm during the Depression and was forced into migrant farm labor when I was only ten years old. As a boy I had little time for school or leisure activities, and I frequently experienced racial prejudice because of my Mexican American heritage. . Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, me and my family faced prejudice everywhere — in the schools, in the fields, in the towns. Restaurants refused to serve Mexican Americans and theaters allowed them to sit only in certain sections. In 1944, when I was seventeen years old, I joined the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II. Even while fighting for my country, I experienced discrimination because of my Mexican American background. After a few years of service I went back to working on farms.Working in the farms was a very cruel job."The whole idea of the union, it’s not only the union, but it represents, together with you and me, all our brothers, Chicano and white and black and everything, represents an idea that poor people can get together and win. Because they, if we build a union in agriculture today, the balance of power is going to turn around, because, in the rural areas, the growers have undisputed power, and the fight is to keep the workers from organizing so they could equal that. If we could organize the workers, without interruptions from the Teamsters Union, I bet you in 5, 6 years, we will be electing state legislators from the rural area, we’ll be electing judges, we’ll be electing city councilmen, and those workers will be taking hold of governmental agencies through their organization. That’s the fight. Because the moment the worker gets a union and feels secure with his job and his income, what is the next step that he thinks of? Automatically he thinks about politics." however, I Cesar Chavez think that everyone should be treated equally and there should be no violence or differences between any race.

Assignment #2: Diversity RAFTS Reina Santiago Block D 1.) You are the school class president. Write out an outline of events for ‘Diversity Day’ at your school. Deliver to principal. Well dear principal my name is Reina, the class president for the senior class. I have a few ideas for Diversity day and there they are I believe that we should have a whole week were we allowed be to speak about their culture. There are some explain like Monday we allow a guess speak to come in and speak to the school also they could bring in a few items to explain their culture. Then the next few days’ people could speak out on how they live their lives and they could share some for their own in experiences. I believe with this organized people could learn more about the people they are surrounded with. So I would like to know how u feels about my ideas. Thank you 2.) You are having your first day at a new school. Visually describe every form of cultural unity and diversity you see. The first day of school was really eye-opening I saw so many different diversity people for example there were all types of race and culture. In a few of my class I noticed mostly all of the students spoke a different language. it was real interesting being in a room full of different culture from around the world. As I sat there I learned all types of things I enjoyed that first day I met a lot of people and learned a few languages I never knew before. 3.) You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games. Dear supervisor I believe that our community is full of gangs and rivals and I came up with some kind of solution. There it is I’m starting a new season of a basketball team and I would like to recruit some of the gangs’ rivals in our community. The reason for this is that with this opportunity it would show them how to work together also it would show leadership trust and honesty. I know u might be worried about violence but it gives us a chance to save teens lives. I believe with our help and, approve we could stop gang violence out in our community. 4.) You are a Native American girl. In a poem, explain to your classmates how you view American expansion in the West. They spread us, they spread us far away, they say, we scatter like little tiny ants, were treated like nothing we lose touch with our families and friends we suffer we start with nothing, and the little we have they take

haha thanks I usually get that alot i thought it didn't make sence at all though.
#4I’m kind of nervous today I’m walking the halls on my first day of school and it seems like everyone is looking at me. There are so many people around me such as blacks, whites Hispanic and more. I never had seen so many races. It seems that everyone is hanging out with their same race I wonder where I am going to sit.
#6Dear Mr. Majiggy I am the ULA basketball couch after seeing the neighborhoods and actions of people I just wanted to let you know that I am going to mix rival gangs together in this team I know it might seem like a bad idea but I feel it will work. The reason for me mixing the rival gangs together is so they will learn to get along with each other and become a team and hopefully if I do a good enough job the neighborhood trouble will start to clear up.
#1Dear Mr. Lubjuski I am making an outline to show you what I am planning in bullet form.
·Students will have a choice wear piece of clothing of their own culture or of another culture if they choose
·All students will attend to the gym at 10:30 for lecture on importance of different cultures
·At 11:25 students be served a variety of foods from different cultures
·I will announce that I am throwing a competition for the school and the best essay about different cultures will get a gift card of 50 dollars to the mall.
Thank you for reading my plan for diversity day tell me what you think throw in any activities you think would go good also.

In the wind they walk
In many languages they talk
From day and night hidden thoughts sleep
When awaken they fall at societies feet
Many colors fly past like the seasons
Never for less than two reasons
This is our nation
Let us grown with happiness and not doubt
Only you will pick the right route.

I liked all of them #6 is messed up with spaces but who cares its still good
2. They come with pretty petty gifts Before attacking us quick and swift And they say that it’s their destiny To rape plunder and pillage and then kill me For I am different from their ideal My skin is dark like an Alaskan fur seal They are white with savage minds That shamelessly discriminates against my kind
They do not relent so we protest But we’re crushed and defeated in the West The world is cruel and I’m depressed But so hopeless I am in the West
And so I walk on with a heavy heart Filled with hate and rage for those who finally tore my people apart
5. It should be noted that any man without a beard or any woman without a veil is commonly looked upon with curiosity in the Middle East. They seem much more reserved that the average easy-going American with his friendly grin and amicable air. Also be mindful of the religion. As opposed to finding a church on every corner, come to expect mosques. Exclaiming ‘G/d bless America’ may lead to negative consequences. Meal time is another thing to watch out for. Be prepared to be eating from one large central dish with you right hand as it is considered unclean to eat with the right. Do not expect silverware. Instead, expect to be using pita bread to scoop up humus with falafel on the side. Try not to ask for pork or wine as it is generally not eaten in the area due to religious practices. Say goodbye to banana sundaes and French fries. Also, learning Arabic would be a smart idea. Do not expect to go up to someone with “hey dude!” and expect them to welcome you courteously. Despite these differences, the people are generally hospitable like they are back at home. They enjoy sports much like we do and value education. Despite religious covering of body parts, many dress as the people in the U.S. would. Jeans are common as well as T-shirts. If a hamburger craving persists, a McDonalds can probably be found within a hundred kilometers.
6. Now why wouldn’t we let these boys play ball against each other? At the end of the day, those boys will be out on the streets fighting each other, engaging in violence, and possibly killing each other if nothing is done. By letting them play basketball with each other, they can settle their differences on the court. They can direct their anger into the game and trying to best each other in a nonviolent way. Basketball will help them develop teamwork and let them learn that there are other ways, better ways that they can deal with their issues. Sure, it’s confrontation, but it’s peaceful confrontation and if doesn’t happen, then those boys would go back to violence. Supervisor, Boss, it’s only logical that this be done. Through sportsmanship, we may help guy these young men down a better path and make them realize that violence is not the answer.
10. The only thing there is in my country is war. The house I lived in has been destroyed by war. The water that used to flow through my village has been drained by war. Even my children, my beloved children have succumbed to the inevitable fate of war. There is no more hope in my land, so I turn to yours. I turn to the land that is brimming with light and a glorious future and I can only dream that it may be mine. The opportunities America is filled with, the openness, the diversity… I long for the freedom and liberty that only in America I can achieve. I have learned the language and am a talented seamstress. Although I physically look different, there is no person with a truer sense of American dignity than I. (So you should let me into your country, please.)
today is supposed to expose individuals to cultures outside their own, so they can compare, contrast, and perhaps adapt a few customs and ideas from foreign cultures.
The first piece of business is to delve into you. What culture are you from? What ideals to you have, what are some of your ways of life, and more or less what makes you tick? Think about this, and then think of a way you can bring your culture to diversity day. Here is a list of activities and events that will take place:
Dress up- people can come dressed in their native dress or more specifically what style of dress their country is known for or associated with. Be prepared to discuss how you are dressed, and why you decided to dress this way.
Flag matching- in the parade field, there will be all the world’s countries flags on display. It is up to you to decide which flag goes with what country.
Food- everyone is required to bring a food, drink, entrée, or anything edible from their own specific country. It will all be up on display, and then it is up to you to decide what you would like to trade. The less generic (i.e pizza, croissants, sushi, etc) the better. Be prepared to discuss what it is, how it is prepared, and why it is specific to your culture.
Music- different ethnic music will be put on display for the enjoyment of all. If you can bring some of your own or perhaps an interment native to your culture, please bring it. Be prepared to discuss what it is, how to play it, etc.
Bring a friend- if you wish to bring someone you feel represents your culture (i.e. grandparent, neighbor, etc.) ask them if they would be willing to come and talk about their culture, religion, or way of life.
r.a.f.t. #2
in they came with guns and powder
their shouts and laughs only growing louder
superior, smarter and ‘civilized’ they were
the spread of this white man, there is no cure.
Kill my grandfather, rape my mom
Is all of your dignity gone?
Burn my town, raze my crop
Oh, will this evil ever stop?
But all is gone, it is not the same
Ever since with their ships they came
But, oh, white men, they wanted our land
And all our history, love and culture is lost in the sand.

If something is not done, we may see these boys behind bars, or possible dead. We need to get them off of the streets and away from violence. They are young, naïve and are heavily influenced by those older than them. If we can remove these poor influences, we could possible turn a few lives around for the better.
Whereas they may be enemies on the streets, putting them together on teams in order to work together may allow them to put aside their differences so they can realize they have no reason to hate each other, and may possible ditch their former ways with their warring gangs. In order for them to work together as a team, they must get to know each other, and they may find out they are not so different from each other. Sports teams are often seen from the outside as a family, or band of brothers. If we put these troubled youths together in a friendly yet competitive way they may see that they can get along with people they may not agree with or were previously enemies with. This may work to bring our neighborhood together and make them more closely-knit, so we can all get along and cut down on violence and crime.

Sincerely: MR BRITO

In the wind they walk
In many languages they talk
From day and night hidden thoughts sleep
When awaken they fall at societies feet
Many colors fly past like the seasons
Never for less than two reasons
This is our nation
Let us grown with happiness and not doubt
Only you will pick the right route.

6.) I am a youth basketball organizer who wants to give rival gangs a chance to join a sport and not be judge by being a gang member. I think that these youngsters should have a chance to join because it can be a way for them to stay off the streets and drop out of gang rivals by dedicating there membership to basketball. Some of them will have the chance to see how it will be to have a family or team that actually cares about them. You see these rival gang members just want a way out and we the organizers of the basketball team can help them make better chioces in there future.

You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games
the reasons i have rival gangs in these basketball games is to bring them together and have them do team work and devlop bonds and stay out of troublem and they will learn how to talk to eachother and work as a team and the as a result it would gradually prevent violence and create peace
its my first day at this school i have come from out of state it is so different because i know no one here i walk the halls by myself i dont know what the school will be like will the people be nice or will they be mean how will the work be its so differnt the classes are big i came from a divison 3 school and now im in a divsion one its so much bigger it has now hit lunch time i have survived half the day where do i sit seems like all the tables are full im going to sit in the empty table lunch is now over and now it is last period that bell has rung to end the school day wow every one is rushing out like a mob this was a very crazy day i wonder what will happen tomorrow

This is my four .. I tried
I think you did very well! I don't think your story was corny at all, and you can definitely rhyme better than me. :D
(So you should let me into your country, please.)
i like number 5, the comparisons are great. for number ten, what country are you coming from? or should i assume your own native country? i was a bit confused...nice poem, also...although my mother thought yours and mine were very violent...

Now I must face this tragic ending.

for number four, what are some similarities between how nbhs and brockton deal with diversity? is there more diversity at nbhs, or brockton, exchange students aside?

I like how you incorporated so many different cultures into the lineup. However, I think an event that incorporated all cultures as a unity would be sometihing nice, also. Good job, though! :)
I really like this poem A LOT! You brought up so many good points but you still incorporated it to yourself so you stayed true to your originality! you have a great writing style that really painted a picture, i could in-vision what you were expressing.
Hello, my name is Chloe Pembroke and I’m a new student from Nova Scotia. My family and I moved to the United States recently.
As I walk through the halls of NBHS, I see a very diverse student body. My school back home was made up of people with Scottish, French, Irish, and English backgrounds. Every where I turn there’s people of many different cultures, chatting with one another. I smile; I have never seen such diversity before. With my red hair and freckles, I completely stand out. I check my schedule. I have Multicultural Studies next period. As I walk into class, I sit down next to a friendly girl. Looking around the classroom, I see pictures reflecting other cultures. My classmates also reflected the many cultures I have never seen back home. Portuguese; Cape Verdean, Hispanic, Asian, you name it. I breathe out a sigh of relief that no one was going to judge me because I was different because everyone else was different too. -- Edited by BiancaDee925 on Saturday 6th of February 2010 02:26:37 PM

Mr. Cavanaugh, you have come to my attention recently asking me why should I include rival gangs in our community center’s basketball games. The reason being is that we should keep gangs off the street and provide them a place to do something nonviolent. Sometimes sports, like basketball, can be a healthy way to relieve tension, anger, stress, and sometimes even loneliness and sadness. Not only will gangs be off the street, but the community will be safer and members of the gangs will have a better way to spend their time. Please take this into consideration.
To Erica: I really like your poems, there's so much emotion! You really captured the feeling of how a Native American must've felt at the time when their land was taken away! Great job!

1.You are the school class president. Write out an outline of events for ‘Diversity Day’ at your school. Deliver to principal.
Dear Mr. Vasconcellos,
I’m writing you to discuss my proposal of Diversity Day.During this day all classes will cease but education will not. Students will move from class to class learning about all the cultures, religions, languages, music, and culture in our world. This is how it will be structured:
Many Culture classes and presentations are introduced and happen at the same time throughout the day. Students can choose which classes to see when, but cannot see a certain presentation more than once. The classes are always presented by a person of the specific group, so a Hindu will talk about Hinduism while a Ethiopian will talk about Ethiopia. All classes will range from 40-60 mins. Classes are not all lectures and can be presentations of different dances, languages and music as well as other practices.
Outline for Diversity Day
7:30 --- All students report to Homerooms for attendance.
8:00--- Classes begin. Each student has a list of classes and in what rooms they can be found.
8:00 -> 2:00 Classes take place educating students about different cultures, religions…etc.
7 minutes are given to the students to be dismissed and leave the school more educated about our world.
Classes Provided:
Culture Presentations:
1.Cape Verdian Culture/History
2.Puerto Rican Culture/History
3.Filipino Culture/History
4.Vietnamese Culture/History
5.Ethiopian Culture/History
6.Lebanese Culture/History (yay!)
7.Mexican Culture/History
8.Chinese Culture/History
Religion Presentations:
1.Hinduism
2.Islam
3.Judaism
4.Wicca
5.Sikhism
6.Christianity
Language and dance presentations aren’t not given because may of the cultural and religious presentations can and will introduce those aspects. Diversity Day will introduce the student body to a huge amount of diversity we have here at NBHS and make us all realize that our diversity makes us strong. I would strongly urge you, Mr. Vasconcellos, to consider promoting Diversity Day for a better tomorrow.
6.You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games.
Hello, I’m here to talk about an idea I had come up with a few months ago about having rival gangs play basketball games with each other. Now, to many, this may seem like an extreme plan: placing gangs that hate each other in a game of basketball with each other, but there is some logic to it. We just have to first understand the game of basketball, then understand the lives of these gangsters lead.
In the years of my experience, basketball has been a very friendly sport. It helps unite peoples from all backgrounds to have a good time. I have players from other continents playing alongside kids that have been here their entire lives. I have kids who would kill for God, but play alongside the “sinners” who don’t believe in any god. We have people of all races playing together and never is the idea of their differences brought up. They put their differences aside and play together because they all have one goal: to play basketball. When you’re busy playing the game, you’re never thinking about the defenders race or religion because you’re having fun. As you score higher and play together, the players build stronger relationships with the teams they play on and against. Tensions are eased, players are complimented on a good shot, or drive. High fives are given all around when a team takes the lead and joy spreads to the players. The fact is, basketball is a uniting force, which is why we need these gangs to play basketball together. Now, for the lives of these gangsters.
They grow up in poor neighborhoods with little money, parental affection, and are directly recruited to join these gangs because they need a sense of community and brotherhood. Soon, the gangs introduce drugs and start selling about all the illegal things you can imagine. When these gangsters stick together it makes them feel loved, making up for the lack of love earlier on in their life. These gangs for whatever reason decide to go to war with each other. They defend drug trade, territory, or their reputation on the streets. These gang members then attempt to kill one another to defend the life they see as the only one for them. New members are constantly recruited and taught about the rival gangs and immediately fill his or her mind with propaganda about the police and other gang members. This breeds violence. They hate each other because they believe rival gang members are different from them and threaten their way of life. Basketball can fix all of this.
The plan would be to have open courts for members to play on. However, there would be one rule: gangs cannot form basketball teams with each other. The gang members have to be distributed evenly across team lines. This forces members from different gangs to play side by side with each other in a non competitive way. If they want to win, they have to work together which breeds friendships. The game will teach them that other gang members are not so different from themselves and there needs not be so much aggressiveness towards one another. In short, this program will help end the rivalry among gangs and all the violence they pursue.
Thank you very much.
10.You are an asylum seeker. In a statement to the State Dept., explain your reasons for wanting to come to America.
To all who care,
There are many reasons why I want to go to the United States of America. The first being my current situation. I am a widow and a Shia Muslim living in Saudi Arabia. Being a minority within Saudi Arabia and within the larger Muslim world, my rights here are severely suppressed. The Saudi government does not respect the beliefs of others within their borders or outside of them. I wish to go to the U.S. to escape the inequality I face here because of my religious beliefs, as well as my status as a widow.
In the U.S. I hope to be treated equally as a human being regardless of what I practice or where I come from. I don’t wish to be looked down up by society for losing my husband and want to be independent where I can live to my fullest potential. American diversity allows me to do so, because so many, from so many different places live their lives in the U.S. every day. All I ask is that I become one more ingredient to enhance the salad bowl.
4.You are having your first day at a new school. Visually describe every form of cultural unity and diversity you see.
As I enter the school for my first day, I begin to notice the slow waves of cultural unity and diversity everywhere. I walk the halls and see students listening to Regaetone and next to those, more students listening to rock; but these groups are not exclusive. Soon after, members of these groups mingle with each other despite their musical diversity. As I enter the Core, I he students wearing the Islamic headscarf walking with students wearing their tight Hollister shirts and Aeropostle jeans.
Groups walk around me speaking in Chinese, Spanish, Creole, and English but soon can be seen talking between groups mainly in English but sometimes in another language. I soon notices cliques become more blurred, where preppy kids are good friends with football jocks, and where track runners are conversing with debaters. The diversity in this school is amazing but at the same time the cultural unity helps being people together both within a certain group and across those groups. I expect to enjoy the next 4 years attending NBHS.
done deal! woo!

What if the gangs forms teams with gang members? couldn't the game get violent as they compete against each other on the court as they do in real life?

1. "Diversity Day Outline" Everyone will come up and talk about their culture and religion with a couple of pictures showing family members and such. Then students can bring in and try on clothes from the different countries to get a feel for being diverse. Student may interact by also asking questions. Students will be asked to bring in their cultures music to be played throughout the day and the day will end with food brought in from each student to see the varieties there are around the world.
2. Leaving is definitely hard for me Wishing I could just count to 3 and be free Is it for good or is it for bad Either way it's going to be sad Life will never be the same, in any way Moving on westward Its a new life, time to look foward
4. It's my first day at a new school and to my suprise I see a lot of diversity between students. All people from different cultures are talking to each other and its not separated. It's ok to have friends that aren't exactly like you. At lunch I was also suprised to see that there are groups of kids from different races sitting with each other. We all tend to get along no matter what color we are and thats a good feeling.
9. New world, new species, not only humans. In the future this world we live in will change and there will be species we have never heard of or seen. Things will be tough and scary at first, but we will and will have to learn how to adapt. With all these new creatures around we can actually benefit from one another and learn some things about each other to survive. It's all about working together to make things better.

4.You are having your first day at a new school. Visually describe every form of cultural unity and diversity you see.
It is my first day of school and I can’t help but notice all of the diversity and cultural unity displayed by the students here. I have seen schools that have some form of diversity, but never before have I have seen so many cultures and races together and acting peacefully and respectfully towards one another. Upon entering the corridors I see students walking in groups more diverse and peaceful than even my former school’s ‘Model UN’. By the time I get to my last class of the day I saw friends shaking hands, asking how do you do, and as I sit down think to myself, what a wonderful school.
6.You are a youth basketball organizer. In a speech to your supervisor, justify your reasons for including rival gangs in games.
I stand by my decision for knowingly allowing rival gang members to play with and compete against each other in our league. We can no longer deny that this problem exists and therefore must acknowledge the problem and begin trying to solve it. A point will be made to place known rivals together along with students who are not members of gangs in order ensure that gangs have little power in basketball. They will begin to know each other and not just go by what they’ve heard or where they’re from. While playing the game they will be united and focused on one goal, winning. For those 40 minutes it won’t matter that the person who you just passed the ball to is in a rival gang. Also bringing different groups whether they’re enemies or not leads to better understanding amongst them and make these youth realize that they aren’t so unlike each other after all.
9.You are a sci-fi author. Outline the plot of your novel which describes how a multi-species world builds respect for diversity.
The story is set in the future where space travel is common and other inhabited planets are known and visited. The main character must travel to one of these planets in order to protect human workers who are taking valuable resources which are desperately needed for earth. The planets inhabitants become increasingly distraught with the destruction being caused and eventually decide to stop being peaceful and begin attacking the crews. Its at this point that the main character realizes that the situation is eerily familiar with a history book he once read about colonization and expansion. He then is torn between stopping the human destruction which will certainly cause much of the earth to die from lack of supplies or doing his human duty and fighting back against this alien species which will likely have deadly repercussions and lead to their extinction, much like happened to many native cultures on earth hundreds of years prior.
10.You are an asylum seeker. In a statement to the State Dept., explain your reasons for wanting to come to America.
Dear Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs
I am writing to you with the intention of requesting political asylum from my native United States of America, due to the recent revolution lead by the rogue Sarah Palin and the TEA Party “activists”. Although my country was always known for its political freedom and democracy in recent months it has become increasingly hostile for those who share political viewpoints with myself. The problems I am requesting asylum from are determined to rid my country of political and social gains made in the last fifty years and are beginning to persecute my fellow people and their families. I fully intend to follow and abide by the laws of your glorious nation known as Canada and look forward to the freedom of my neighbor to the north. Once again I would like to thank you and your fellow citizens for considering political asylum for myself from the regressive TEA Party regime that will stop at nothing to destroy what was once my home country and our values.
2. You are a Native American girl. In a poem, explain to your classmates how you view American expansion in the West.
They are spreading; they are spreading like wild fire.
Each day, they come like the wind.
Eventually they will catch up to us.
The fire will keep burning, until theirs nothing left of us
4. You are having your first day at a new school. Visually describe every form of cultural unity and diversity you see.
The first day I went to school I saw so much diversity like white, black and some kids who are half white and black. Every person has a great story about their family and how their family immigrated to America. When I was walking in the halls I heard so much different languages like Spanish, Portuguese and even some Cape Verdean Creole. In this school people don’t see color; they only judge you on your character.
5. You are US diplomat in a Middle East embassy. In a memo, analyze the similarities and differences between both cultures.
Pakistan and Iran have a lot in common, both countries are an Islamic Republic. Both countries dress the same and have a similar government system. The difference between Pakistan and Iran is that Iran is primarily Shia and Pakistan is primarily Sunni. Iranians are mostly Persians, but the Pakistanis are a mixture of many race’s.
10. You are an asylum seeker. In a statement to the State Dept., explain your reasons for wanting to come to America.
I would like to come to America because I want a better life for me and my family. My children are getting older and I want them to go to a great college in the United States, because I think they will learn more in the United States compared to their country. The education that they will learn in America will be beneficial to them and their family. I will work hard and find a great job for my children and I will take the test to become a American citizen, I’m studying American history, when I get to America I will know everything about it, for example its diverse culture.

Great Plains- Great Dreams.
White or Indian.
Our Tribal Lands,
That’s not what they want. They want reservations
Gold is what they want.
They think the Wild West will make everything right
But now all we do is fight.
Their railroad tracks are now our tracks of tears.
We are delusional.
Delusional to our future.
I listen to what I am told;
I am told we will fight.
Fight for what is ours.
No one can take that away- not even the WHITES
And so I hope.
Great Plains?
Great Dreams?

The year is 2083. Since the beginning of time, the world wakes up and interacts with the same species, everyday. Until now. Robots that were meant to help make the world’s technology role in building great respect for diversity in the communities we live in today. The affects of the robots creates a new respect to people. One robot is equal to all regardless of their exterior appearances. They are the symbol of unity. Unity for the people who once never believed there was such a thing.

The first day of school is always nerve racking. New schools even more. But to my surprise this school was like no other. I felt welcomed. I walked into the office to meet the student that was going to walk me around. There were 4 of them; Sonya the captain of the Debate team, Jeremy a track runner, Kyle the captain of the boy’s soccer teams, and Katie from the schools JROTC. They wanted to make me as comfortable as possible. Welcome me to all kind of possibilities. My first class was U.S History. Our assignment for the week was to design a flag that represented us from our culture and personality. Next was art, we had to paint our classmates regardless of their race of how we see them through a short autobiography. Then lunch my favorite! It wasn’t like many other schools there were no cliques. I sat with people from the chess team, some of the girl swimmers, 2 girls from the asian culture club, Tara from South Africa, and Tim from France. Pretty unique if you ask me. My last class of the day was Multicultural Studies. The teacher was really cool. He had posters all over the room from different countries, and different important figures from all over. I loved my first day at Jefferson High, or should I call it Diversity High?

I like how you incorporated so many different cultures into the lineup. However, I think an event that incorporated all cultures as a unity would be sometihing nice, also. Good job, though! :)
You are Nelson Mandela. After being elected president, give a speech to the National Party concerning future race relations
in this speech i would say thank u for electing me president in this speech i want to focus on race relations i wont to impove it i want there to be no hate crimes no kkk no aryan brother hood i want every one to love one another to be treated equaly to be treated teh same no mattter the clorer
What if the gangs forms teams with gang members? couldn't the game get violent as they compete against each other on the court as they do in real life?
The game should be monitored. Hopefully they will work it out through the game instead of violently.
i see what you mean. do you think the game will help solve their differences? or just let them move past them to play a game of basketball?
