Gabriel's Revolt---- For anyone who needs halp on this topic,

http://chss.montclair.edu/english/furr/spl/gabrielrevolt.html

I got my information from this site, I found the book's version to be unsatisfactory, and this site really helped me.

So, Gabriel was the slave of Tomas H. Prosser of Virginia. Both he and his brothers were the main orchestrators of this slave uprising, and were commited to the cause. The conspiracy was well thought it out, but the gonverner of Virgina, Monroe, caught on to what was happening and began formulating a plan to put a stop to it. The revolt was scheduled for August 30th, and could have been successful, however two slaves alerted their master to what was going on, and the governer was alerted. Monroe called the milita to action, and commanded them to diffuse the situation at hand. Many, many of the slaves that were part of this revolution were killed, including Gabriel himself. This rebellion was an inspiration, and got the wheels of rebellion turning for slaves across America.

Aubrie,

The components of the Evangelical Impulse (specifically women's role in it and their values/beliefs).

The Evangelical Impulse
-major driving force in public life throughout all social groups in America, including blacks, women, and children.
-They preached with enthusiam for their religion and knit their believers closely together.
-Women and children gained a powerful sense of social belonging in the changing society.
-People helped each other and tried to lift their spirits.

The main effects of the Evangelical Impulse
-equality of all people
-universal salvation
-made people responsible fior their own soul.
-influenced the later reforms like abolition.

Weakness on: The war of 1812

WAR on 1812:
- Small War
- Defeated England's ships in the Great Lakes
- This was caused the Americans to be embrasses after British soliders marched into Washington D.C. and burnt it down.
- The was ended when both sides signed a peace treaty, no one wins.
- After the treaty was signed, Jackson attacked British soliders in New Orleans.
- This was the greatest victory, only 70 American suffered and Jackson becomes a hero.
- After this victory, England backed off of America.

Strategies of Iroquios Survival

Iroquios
-Handsome Lake; Iroqious
    - cultural revivalizaion
    - taught people ideals with mix of Christian beliefs along with traditional Iroquios beliefs
              - offered hope and renewed pride

Overall the Itoquios were peaceful with the whites and they pursued serval strategies to survive. But in order to improve their outlook on life despite the changes that they were unwillingly going through, Handsome Lake helped inspired them to be proud of their heritage and hope for a better future and attempted to change individual lives for the better.

**TO VANESSA**

The Treaty of Greenville was a treaty signed after the Battle of Fallen Timbers. It Had seperated the land amoung the indians and the U.S. The white settlers were forbidden to cross even though the white settlers had paid no attention to it. The treaty also gave the United States of America the land of modern day Ohio and the U.S gave the Indians goods such as blankets and tools.

Kori,
In Datmouth College v. Woodward the case deals with the trustees of the Dartmouth college tried to force it into becoming a public institution of the state. When the Supreme Court upheld the decision that the previous charter, signed for the school being private, could not be reproduced and made public. This shows that it is unconstitional to change previously made charters.

It's a city and cities tend to be overpopulated. If there is a lot of inhabitants, there is bound to be poor sanitation and poor housing. People, mostly immigrants, moved to American cities to seize job opportunites caused by industrialization and economic growth.

To Mel:

Economic Growth

Between 1820 and 1860 the American economy shifted from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy. Americans would now start to work in factories instead of working on farms. However this new economy was unstable. The economy would alter between periods of depression and economic gain. This caused changes in prices in goods and job availability. This change in economy was invoked during the British Industrial Revolution.

To AWHBRY:

HOW WOMEN WERE KEY IN CHAPTER 10:

Women had a big role during this time period. They were often hired by factories for cheap labor. By 1830 women were about 70% of the workforce in the Lowell textile workforce. These 12-hours a day jobs were extremely exhausting. Women could also never get promoted as high as a man could. However this was considered perfectly normal for the time period. In the 1830’s many women formed a union and went on strike because of pay cuts. Women in the workforce were then replaced by new immigrates to the country.

Vanessa Souza:

The Treaty of Greenville was a treaty established when the Battle of Fallen Timbers ended. The treaty was between the Indians and the white Americans restricting whites from crossing a line that it established. even though it gave the U.S. modern day Ohio, it upset many Americans because it did not permit them to go into the Indian land. This Treaty did put a damper on trade and westward expansion to some extent, but was never really enforced.

Indian-white relations in the early republic

This section is about the early nineteenth century and the native Americans that were in control of areas of the trans- Appalachia until the white settlers and their black slaves came in and took over. The government developed policies that would assimilate the native Americans into the white society. Bydoing this the Native Americans were guaranteed the lands which they were on. But because the fur trading industry was bringing handsome profits the government sought new lands in which to expand this empire. So the government demanded more land and so the lands of the Native Amerisans were decreasing. The indians refusal to cooperate and leave their territory and move to other lands made the government take drastic measures and forced them out by using , military force this procedure of moving the indians out was called the Indian Removal Policy.

- Tony and Mel -

War of 1812

Americans mainly in the west and south were demanding war with the british because they were getting tired of Britain's presence in America and also th efact that they were encouraging the indians to conduct raids and attacks on American comerce. Under pressure from Americans President Madison asked congress to declare war but their were opposition came from New England and Mid- Atlantic states but the south and west voted solidly for the war. Instead of waiting Madison decided use military coercion and suspend European blockades. because of the disloyalty the New England gather to discuss a secession, but the calmer folks at the meeting  prevailed and this did not follow through. The New Englanders saw these acts as unconstitutional.

Urban Life

This section of chapter 10 is about how the cities were dramatically impacted by econmic growth. This impact was before the civil war. The rate of urbanization in the United states was faster than ever before. In 1820 , about 9 percent of the American people lived in cities. forty years after more than 20 percent lived in the ciites, the cities which were occupied were Cincinnati, Columbus and chicago these were th enwely formed cities while the old cities such as Philadelphia and New York mushroomed. Urban growth did nt ony take palce in the east but it had the most dramatic impact. More than one third of the people living in the Northeast were urban residents but in the west their was only 14 percent and 7 in the south.

Tony,
Oppertunities in the old northwest

Many people did not have enough money to start farming. Although this was the case many people dedied to borrow money from banks, relatives, or insurance companies. Within several years many people were able to save up enough money to buy theire own farms
and these farms supplied jobs to just about anyone.

Justin,
-Middle Class Life and ideals

Many of the middle class people benefitted greatly from the increase in wealth. The people lives comforably with nice furnishing and with little worries about money. Also the change in roles of men and women contributed to this newly formed middle class. By women earning money along with men it enables families to make more money. Also men were now more in involved in the household making people look at life in a different perspective,

It was possible to farm with little money. Farmers could borrow money to buy land, rent land, or work as hired hands. Farmers were able to make good money because there was not much labor. If they saved their money, they could soon have land of their own and become independent. The northwest gave farmers the chance to create their own farm and become successful.

To Vicky Smith and Cassandra Borges...
Indian White relations...
The goals of Indian Removal was to find a way to remove the natives peacfully, without of causing anouther war. Indian intercourse act of 1790 was passed to do just this. The Intercourse act improves indian white relations because now if anybody wanted land it must be approved by congress to buy. The act proved succesfull because the natives ceded land for yearly annuity payments and for goods. Anouther part of indian relations was the federal goverment's want to dominate the fur trade.
Up until the jackson administration, the peacefull removal of natives policy was in effect. The Jackson administration changed this entirerly with the treaty of eschota and the indian removal act. The peacful removal of indians before became the forceful removal now. This ultimatley led to the trail of tears in which thousands of indians marched from their homes across the mississippi.

Hoped this helped...

Kenzie- War of 1812 (often known as the forgotten war)
The War of 1812 was between Great Britain and the United States. It was fougt from June 1812- 1815, after the Revolutionary War and before the Civil War. Battles and warfare took place mainly in the Atlantic Ocean but also along the coast as well. The main concern was based on the fact that Britain continiously practiced the use of impressment on American sailors. Also, conficts between Europe's two most powerful nations; Britain and France, led to a direct influence on trade in America. The war lasted for over two years with the ultimate result of United States independence.

Mel- Great Awakening / Evangelical Impulse

The Great Awakening occured during a time of increased religious activity. Areas affected by the uprising were New England, but also other parts of the American colonies. Different areas were changed and influenced by the Great Awakening in unique ways. Many different groups branched out and more diverse people were welcome, even African Americans. The increased religious activity took place as far from New England as Georgia with illiterate and educated or rich and poor people, all held a spot in the transition.
