Assignment #3: Museum Exhibit on the 1980's

Sources: http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/index.htm, http://kclibrary.lonestar.edu/decade80.html, http://www.liketotally80s.com/index.html

Background: The 1980’s was a very interesting decade. Ronald Reagan was president. The US and the USSR were enemies with thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at one another. Rubik’s cubes were everywhere. America went through a severe recession and the largest stock market crash since the Depression. A space shuttle exploded. Michael Jackson and Madonna were huge. The Red Sox came within an out of winning the World Series, and lost. (It still hurts.) The 1980’s was the decade when the Cold War ended and when personal computers changed the way the world communicates, works and plays. It was a time of enormous change. It was also the time when I was in high school, watching it all from behind a desk or in front of a computer, just like you.

Assignment: You’re a museum curator. What does a curator do? Click here to find out. You’ve been told by your boss that the museum is going to create an entire wing of their building devoted to the 1980’s.

You’ve been put in charge of the project. You have room for some exhibits, but because of the amount of time you have, you can only complete more exhibits if you have help from other people. If you want to work in a group, follow this chart:

Members

Exhibits

What will the exhibits be about? There are a lot of potential themes that you can consider in the 1980’s, such as Reagan, the Cold War, sports, music, fashion, disasters, fads, computers, the space shuttle program, books, movies, famous people, international events, television and more.

So what goes in the exhibits? Take a look at the websites listed in the sources above for ideas. You have space for 5 items in each exhibit. Think about how you can visualize your exhibit as someone walks through it. What do you see, hear, touch, taste or smell? Is your exhibit interactive, or is it materials preserved behind a glass case? Click here to get a look at some sample museum exhibits. Basically, your exhibit should meet 4 requirements:

· Interactivity – There should be something for the museum guest to do while in your exhibit.

· Visually stimulating – Colors and design are very important in the presentation of your exhibit.

· Content validity – A museum guest should be able to learn information from your exhibit.

· Coolness factor – Your exhibit should be something that is memorable and encourages people to recommend it to someone else.

So what do you do here? Well, it’s a good thing you read all of the directions above. Here are the steps:

· Step #1: Choose your teammates or decide if you’d like to work alone.

· Step #2: Determine what themes you are going to use for your exhibits. Write your initials on the board under the category, so we can equally distribute them.

· Step #3: Once you’ve chosen your themes, begin your research. You’re looking for information on 5 displays for each exhibit. For example, if you chose ‘movies’, you will choose to research 5 movies from the 1980’s. For each, write a placard concerning its importance in the 1980’s. Include detailed information about who, what, when, where, why and how. Be selective in what you choose as your final 5. You want your exhibit to be awesome!

· Step #4: Now that you have research on 5 displays for each of your 3 themes (15 total), you’re going to write out your description of your exhibit. In your own words, describe what someone would see as they walked through your exhibit. Be as descriptive as possible. When you’re finished, you’re done! Great work!

Evaluation: You will be given a maximum of 40 points for completing your research and writing a description for each of your 15 displays (5 displays each for 3 exhibits). You will be given 40 points for writing out a detailed walkthrough of each exhibit. You will be given 10 points for making a positive comment, asking an appropriate question, or providing a constructive suggestion to another student’s work/post. You will also be given 10 points for appropriately responding to another student’s comment, question or suggestion.

Thanks for your effort!

 Music

  • It has often been said that Jazz music is one of the few truly American art forms, born and bred in the USA.
  • Isn’t it fitting that on this 25th anniversary of the release of Thriller that the clear front-runner in our 80s poll about the Best 80s Song is MJ himself at 32% of the  Votes.
  • The origin of break dancing dates back to the late 1960's and early 1970's in the South Bronx of New York City and the term refers to the dance moves that are associated with the breaks in the music.

  • From 1980 to 1984 breakdancing, which by then had gone mainstream was everywhere from movies including Breakin' (also known as Breakdance The Movie), Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo and Krush Groove in addition to many others and were featured in music videos and television programs which showcased B-Boys' and B-Girls' immense talent along with songs such as Irene Cara's smash hit "Breakdance."

  • As the record industry continued to slump, A&M trimmed its artist roster of nearly 100 artists to about 45 artists, although it signed Split Enz in January.

  • All four Grammy awards went to the Police and Sting. The Police and Styx each picked up two RIAA gold records out of the seven given to the label, and A&M was awarded four platinum records.

  • Extreme's debut album released. Sold 300,000 copies.

  • 1981 The Walkman II was introduced.

  • 1982 Michael Jackson?s ?Thriller? album released by the Columbia subsidiary Epic Records ultimately sold 40m copies world wide and became the most successful product in the history of recorded sound.

  • 1983 CD was officially launched in the UK on 1 March. It was hailed as "the most important development in the recorded music industry since the long playing record".

 Television

  • It’s no secret that Ghostbusters was a very popular movie.
  • Doesn’t it make you long for the good-old days when movie entertainment was so innocent? No shooting, no real violence – just good clean fun? Yes, Back to the Future is definitely a movie that can define the entertainment of the 80s.
  • Although The Love Boat first aired in 1977, the show was definitely owned by the 80s.
  • On June 11, 1982 the world was introduced to one of the most heartwarming movies of the decade. Directed by Steven Spielberg, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was and still is the quintessential family film.
  • The Breakfast Club is a movie we’ll never forget.
  • The name of this funny and wholesome family show was The Cosby Show and we welcomed the Cosbys into our homes and hearts right from the start.
  • At least that was the case with the popular NBC family sitcom ALF which first aired on September 22, 1986 and ran until June 18, 1990.
  • The little blue creatures known as the Smurfs first appeared in October of 1958. However, it would take the 1980’s Saturday morning cartoon to launch them into stardom and cartoon history.
  • Today Mr. T, an actor known for the immense collection of jewelry or “Bling” that he wore and his trade mark Mohawk haircut, as well as the show he stared on are icons for 80’s television.
  • In the 80’s the hottest hit show, Dallas, belonged to ABC’s competitor, CBS.

1980`s Music

Madonna After evolving from a cute-but-naughty virgin to the monolith she is today, Madonna embodies all that was good from the 80s. She’s still bringing it to us, material girl style.

U2 Hardcore U2 fans from the early days always qualify their fandom with "I love their older stuff." But while Sunday, Bloody Sunday was perfect for its time, U2 has managed to continue to evolve, in music, in attitude, and in super-kitsch Bono glasses.

Aerosmith Yes, technically they made their name in the 1970s, but the 80s wouldn't have been the same without this original-hair-band's input. Aerosmith will never die, and we'll always be able to count on them for one thing - the unchanging power ballad.

However, the 80s were also home to some musicians who, sadly, stayed in the 80s. In 1978, Olivia Newton-John became a heroine to a plethora of young girls, and let that status skyrocket her into fame with her totally rad, anatomically inspired songs like Physical and Heart Attack. And Cyndi Lauper, even after a small run on the small screen in the decades following, left her fab fame in the 80s after her fans left behind their own jelly bracelets and outrageously punk-meets-pop hair.

Speaking of hair, the 80s music scene was alive with trendsetting manes, no matter what genre. We had the infamously rowdy hair bands, like Bon Jovi, Poison, and Van Halen, as well as the infamously quirky new wave stylers like the Thompson Twins. And refusing to be outdone by their outrageous hair, both The Cure's Robert Smith and Culture Club's Boy George took their androgenous looks and used them to promote their amazing music to the masses all throughout the 80s.

.

Michael Jackson Let us not forget the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. MJ's superstardom had the whole world screaming over a simple sequined glove. He also broke records with his 1983 horror flick video for "Thriller," the longest, most expensive, and most elaborate music video of its time. And while his later life may have been filled with turmoile, back in the 80s Michael Jackson moonwalked his way into millions of hearts, and it was bad. You know it.

After the first movie, they made a sequal to the movie but just like any other sequel, it was not as good as the first. They also made a “Ghost Busters” cartoon series.
